Earthwatch Institute is an international environmental charity founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1971. We have offices in USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, India, and Brazil. We also have scientific field research projects all over the world.
Our mission is to engage people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.
Worldwide, Earthwatch works with a wide range of partners, from companies, governments and academic institutions to the individuals who participate in our field research projects. Our participants come from all walks of life including corporate employees, teachers, young people, emerging scientists and members of the general public.
Our Unique Approach: Empowering global ‘Citizen Scientists’
Earthwatch involves people as funded or self-funding volunteers in scientific field research. Since 1971, we have sent more than 90,000 volunteers into the field to work with over a thousand scientists on projects around the world. By involving people in hands-on scientific research and education, we help them to develop the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to take action for the environment. Together we conduct vital research into climate change, ecosystem services, ocean health and cultural heritage.
By supporting scientific research conducted by leading scientists from a range of disciplines, our results form the necessary basis for future decisions about the environment.
Working with businesses
For 20 years, Earthwatch has worked closely with international companies to develop and deliver pioneering engagement and learning opportunities that motivate and inspire employees, as well as equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to drive change towards more sustainable business practice.
We are one of the three partners in the HSBC Water Programme (a five-year programme on freshwater launched by HSBC in 2012) and one of the four partners in the HSBC Climate Partnership (a five-year programme on climate change launched by HSBC in 2007).
Earthwatch’s Hong Kong office opened in 2007 and is currently setting up field and learning programmes for companies in the region.
